If you’re in the market for a bathroom renovation, it’s important to know what goes into a bathroom fitting.

At DMS Plumbing, we understand that every homeowner is different and has unique needs. That’s why we take the time to understand your specific requirements before starting the fitting process.

In this blog post, we’ll give you a behind-the-scenes look at how we conducted a bathroom renovation in Riverclub, Sandton.

Precise Numbers and No Mistakes

Our client called DMS Plumbing to help fit a new basin into their newly renovated bathroom.

Many clients think a basin fit only requires a few minutes to do it properly but, as any reputable bathroom contractor will tell you, this is not the case.

In order to ensure a proper fit, we take our time to get the precise measurements needed for our team to do the work without rushing. The biggest reason we need to be precise withour measurements is that we have to drill through a resin countertop.

This means we only get one shot at perfection before we drill. We can’t afford to make mistakes with expensive countertops. Inaccurate drilling or incorrect measurements lead to undesirable results.”

Lining up Measurements

For the resin countertop, we needed to line up four different measurements before mounting or drilling.

The four markings we made were::

  • The center of the basin
  • The center of the top of the counter
  • The center of where the tap is inserted
  • The center where the waste needs to be

After we made those measurements, it was time to head into the bathroom and get additional measurements to properly fit the basin before the countertop was installed.

More Centering

Once we had drilled the hole, we needed a few more measurements before mounting the countertop to the bathroom wall.

The measurements we needed included finding the following:

  • Where the center of the counter was
  • Where the center of the bathroom wall was
  • Where the center of the hanging mirror that goes behind the counter was

After the final center measurements (we promise those were the last ones), we needed to ensure there was space for the center of the basin (OK, we lied, this is the last center measurement) and across the basin.

All of this equates to about 40 minutes to an hour of prepping measurements.

Installing the Countertop

Now we come to the main attraction, which is installing the countertop for the bathroom renovation.

Since DMS didn’t install the pipes in the bathroom (since this wasn’t a new bathroom renovation) we were unsure of where the bathroom piping was through the walls.

To fix this problem, DMS uses a thermal imager in order to get an accurate picture of where all the piping runs in the bathroom. This ensures we don’t make mistakes like drilling into the piping while we mount the counter.

We now start drilling to mount the counter, and because this client has porcelain, tiling we use a special drill bit called a ceramic drill bit. This makes sure we prevent damage when we are first drilling through the tiles.

Once the initial drilling is complete, we set the drill to the hammer action setting and make the holes we need in order to properly mount the countertop.
